Definition of Tonic, Cardiac:

A restorative which improves the tone of the heart, restoring energy and strength to the debilitated organ, by imperceptibly stimulating vital functions [Culbreth1927, pg 38], with a sure, long lasting effect [Sanchez BOTM680].

Have to take for a long period of time but get a long term benefit [Palmer2004].
